Halve USA is Halve on the 50 states, free and new every day. You get one state and a straight edge: cut it into two equal halves, three times. Your eye for maps does the rest.
How to play Halve USA
Every day brings one US state, the same for every player, and three rounds on it.
Draw one straight line across the state, adjust its two handles, then cut. One cut per round, and it's final.
Round 1 splits the state's area. Round 2 splits its people. Round 3 brings an unusual layer, announced at the start of the round and shown only after your cut: split it in half, or sort two layers apart (forests on one side, farmland on the other).
Each round scores up to 100 points: the closer your split is to 50/50, or your sort to the best one straight line can do, the more you score. A cut within half a point is perfect.
A new state arrives at 01:00, Paris time.
Questions
Is Halve USA free?
Yes. Halve USA is free and you can play without an account. A free Letsdle account is optional: it keeps your stats and streak on every device.
Which states are in the draw?
The 50 states take turns, one a day, the same for everyone. Washington, D.C. and the territories are not in the draw.
Where do the maps and the population come from?
State lines come from Natural Earth (public domain): the Great Lakes and the sea are not part of a state. Population comes from GHSL 2025, by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, land cover from ESA WorldCover, and store locations from All the Places (CC0, the chains' own store locators). Each is grouped into weighted points, so a split is measured to a fraction of a point.
What is the unusual round?
Round 3 cuts the same state by something unexpected: split its forests, its farmland or its wetlands in half, or sort two layers apart, such as forests from farmland. Some states get a hand-picked theme. You only see where it lies after your cut.
Is it the same game as Halve World?
Same rules, same scoring, a different puzzle. Halve World gives you a country, Halve USA a state, and each keeps its own streak and stats. Switch between them with the World and USA tabs at the top of the page.
Can I share my result without spoiling the state?
Yes. The share text and image show your three scores and the edition number, never the state of the day.
